Super Typhoon Haiyan has caused serious destruction in the Philippines. Thousands have been killed, countless homes have been destroyed, and hundreds of thousands of Filipinos left homeless.
The YWCA of Korea has been shocked by arresting images of destroyed landscape and desperate people whose lives have been ruptured. Two months after Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines, good progress has been made in many areas but people are still dependent on humanitarian support, particularly to rebuild their homes.
The YWCA of Korea had been called to respond to a significant typhoon in the Philippines and responding with donations for the people in desperate need. From November 18 to December 31, 2013, the YWCA of Korea had been conducting a national campaign for the donations responding to the impact of Typhoon Haiyan. In total 52 local YWCAs had been holding a fund-raising campaign and taken actions for donations to the Typhoon Haiyan.
The YWCA of Korea and Seoul YWCA conducted street campaigns outside the offices of National YWCA of Korea. ‘DaAll’ – (Seoul YWCA activist group formed of immigrant wives from Philippines, China, Japan, Russia, Vietnam and Mongolia) held a bazaar for donations to the Typhoon Haiyan Disaster Management Fund.
During that time, YWCA of Korea has raised USD 24,643 (PHP 1,090,700) and sent it in support to the YWCA of Philippines striving to meet the needs of the people affected by this typhoon in the Philippines, on January 10, 2014.
We hope that these funds will be used to provide emergency relief activities and will include the provision of emergency shelter, food, livelihood support, and other essential services. This is a first step, and YWCA of Korea will support and pray for long-term recovery and rehabilitation efforts.
