Rainbow Cafe was opened by Ulsan YWCA, Korea on September 23, 2009 on the first floor of the associations building. Migrant women wearing new Barista clothes work three shifts in the cafe to juggle child-care duties and other employment positions. Rainbow Cafe is an initiative through the ‘Social Service Job Creating Pilot Project’ developed by YWCA of Korea with the support of Ministry of Women. YWCA of Korea has provided the vocational programme to strengthen the capacity of migrant women through providing them employment opportunities in the social service sector. YWCA of Korea has also developed employment opportunities in areas including clothes mending, English instructing, nail artistry, counseling services, hair styling, natural cosmetics manufacturing and folk artistry.
The understanding and support of the family is essential for the migrant women to start and continue with their work. Staff of the Ulsan YWCA said, ‘We hold pre-meetings for the husbands to share the content of the programme and so they can develop an understanding for the jobs. It is a very effective way to draw support of the family.’

Migrant women that participated this programme doubled their self-confidence and are proud members of Korean society. ‘I graduated from College in Mongolia, but I had to take care of children and finding a job was hard here. Now I have a job in this cafe, I can make coffee and make money. It’s so exciting, ‘ said a Mongolian migrant women working in the cafe.
Rainbow Cafe plans to purchase fair trade coffee from Vietnamese farmers and migrant women from Vietnam working in the cafe will proudly introduce their mother countries’ product. Customers can help migrant women and farmers by enjoying a cup of coffee at Rainbow Cafe?
